Expert Perspectives on Detecting Fake News and Misinformation Governance Using Generative Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria: A Qualitative Exploratory Study

Abstract

The rapid spread of misinformation in digital communication environments presents significant challenges to information integrity, particularly in emerging media ecosystems such as Nigeria. Recent developments in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) have introduced new possibilities for detecting and managing misleading information across digital platforms. This study investigates how generative AI can contribute to governing information integrity within Nigeria’s misinformation ecosystem from a communication perspective. Using an exploratory qualitative approach, the study draws on in-depth interviews with experts in artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital media, and information governance. The findings reveal that generative AI can enhance the monitoring of misinformation by identifying misleading narratives, analyzing persuasive message patterns, tracking the spread of viral content, and supporting real-time verification processes in journalism and fact-checking. However, the study also shows that the effectiveness of AI technologies depends on contextual adaptation, ethical governance, and collaboration among stakeholders. AI systems alone cannot fully address misinformation challenges without the support of media literacy initiatives and institutional communication strategies. The study concludes that generative AI can play a significant role in strengthening information integrity within digital public communication.

Dr. Adamkolo Mohammed Ibrahim, PhD, is a Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri, Nigeria. His research interests include Mass Communication and Journalism, Development Communication, Social Media Studies, Digital Media Studies, and Social Television.

Babatunde Raphael Ojebuyi, University of Ibadan

Babatunde Raphael Ojebuyi, PhD, is a full-time lecturer in the Department of Communication and Language Arts at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Ojebuyi’s teaching and research interests cover media studies in the areas of New Media, Applied  Communication, Development Communication, and Health Communication. 

Titi Fola-Adebayo, Federal University of Technology

Professor Titi Fola-Adebayo obtained a PhD degree in Communication and Language Arts from the University of Ibadan.  Her research interests and activities have primarily focused on Literacy, Communication, Development Communication, Professional Development, Blended Learning, computer-mediated discourse, and the integration of Technology in Language Teaching. She has published extensively in local and high-impact international journals, books, and conference proceedings.

Akindeji Ibrahim Makinde, Federal University of Technology

Dr Akindeji Ibrahim Makinde is a Lecturer and Researcher. He obtained his PhD. M. Tech. and B.Tech in Computer Science from The Federal University of Technology, Akure. He is a certified Python Data Scientist and holds certificates in facilitating online learning and machine learning. He has extensive experience in app and web development.

Olayinka A. Egbokhare, University of Ibadan

Olayinka A. Egbokhare, PhD, is a full-time lecturer in the Department of Communication and Language Arts, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a creative writer and content developer for issues surrounding medical humanities and gender; she also does advocacy on media literacy and its effects.

Peter Adebayo Aborisade, Federal University of Technology

Peter Adebayo Aborisade is a Professor of English and Communication at FUTA, Team Leader, FUTA Blended Learning Research Group and Former Director, Centre for Open and Distance Learning. He led the TETFund/NRF project, A Pedagogical Adaptive Model and Framework of Blended Learning for Higher Education Institutions for Employability in Nigeria, with Olubode-Sawe, Fola-Adebayo and Makinde (with three others), during which two apps: TeachMate, a curriculum plan toolkit that helps teachers to plan their courses and Schem@, a learning activity design toolkit, were designed and produced.

Mayokun Joyce Olowoniyi, Federal University of Technology

Mayokun Joyce Olowoniyi, PhD, is a Lecturer in the Institute of Technology-Enhanced Learning and Digital Humanities at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. She obtained her Master's Degree in Philosophy in 2016 from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and completed her Doctorate Programme in 2025.  Her research interests are in ethics, social and political philosophy, as well as African Philosophy.

Tayo Raymond Eegunlusi, Federal University of Technology

Tayo Raymond Eegunlusi, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in the General Studies Unit, Institute of Technology-Enhanced Learning and Digital Humanities, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. He is a recipient of the 2020-2021 TETFund Book Development Project grant, is a Senior Lecturer in Ethics and Social and Political Philosophy at the Department of General Studies, Institute of Technology-Enhanced-Learning and Digital Humanities, FUTA.  His research areas include Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, Security Studies, Cultural Studies and Global Economic Ethics.

Oluwayemisi Olusola Adebomi, Federal University of Technology

Dr Oluwayemisi Olusola Adebomi is a Senior Lecturer in the General Studies Unit, Institute of Technology-Enhanced Learning and Digital Humanities, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. She obtained her PhD from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 2017. She has several publications along the lines of her research interests: stylistics, discourse and new media studies.
